Key ingredients

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is a β-hydroxy acid. It is also the only β-hydroxy acid that is used in skincare. It is a chemical exfoliant and works by encouraging the desquamation of excess dead cells from the surface of the skin to reveal smoother, healthier-looking skin below. Chemical exfoliants encourage the shedding of dead skin cells by dissolving the “glue” that holds them to the surface of the skin. Unlike AHAs, which include glycolic and lactic acid, among others, salicylic acid is lipophilic, or oil soluble, which means that it can penetrate the pores to exfoliate the pore lining and dissolve clogs. This property, in addition to salicylic acid’s anti-inflammatory, sebostatic, and anti-microbial properties, also makes the ingredient a comedolytic, i.e., an ingredient that inhibits the formation of acne, which forms when sebum and dead skin cells become trapped inside the pore and can take the form of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

Organic, Cold-Pressed Sunflower Seed Oil

Sunflower seed oil is known for its high linoleic acid content. Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that plays a crucial role in maintaining the skin’s barrier function and preventing excessive water loss. It also reinforces cell membranes and exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Interestingly, research indicates that individuals with acne often have lower levels of linoleic acid in their sebum, highlighting its significance in skin health and making sunflower seed oil especially beneficial for those with acne-prone skin types.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil exhibits high oxidative stability and resistance to rancidity. Studies on jojoba suggest that it has an option topical activate-inflammatory effect and is also able to enhance the above ingredients through the skin. Jojoba oil contains wax esters in high concentration and has a composition similar to the sebum that our skin naturally produces. This makes it especially good for skin conditions that involve altered skin barriers, the likes of acne and dermatitis. It has also been found to be beneficial against skin aging and skin infections.

Panthenol

Panthenol is the alcohol form of pantothenic acid or vitamin B5. It readily penetrates into the skin where it is converted to pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid is highly hygroscopic, i.e., it is effectively able to hold on to water, which is why it is often added to cosmetic formulas as a humectant or an ingredient that is used to moisturize and hydrate the skin. It also helps maintain the integrity of the skin’s barrier, resulting in a reduced rate of transepidermal water loss through the skin and improved wound healing.
